Prof. Jessica C. Garwood
assistant professor
My research interests focus on small-scale physical-biological interactions in the coastal ocean, especially their implications for transport of organisms with vertical behavior. To elucidate these dynamics, I collaborate with engineers to develop swarms of small underwater robots.
researchers

Dr. Leilane Passos
research associate
Leilane is a physical oceanographer and an advocate for FAIR data. Leilane develops workflows for real-time data acquisition and processing for several novel sensors, and investigates changing ocean conditions using regional numerical models.

Dr. Jasen Jacobsen
postdoctoral scholar
Jasen’s research focuses on how fluid processes in the ocean shape marine ecosystems, from nutrient dynamics to higher trophic levels. Using numerical simulations and observations, Jasen studies how physical processes drive changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton growth, abundance, and distribution to better understand how environmental variability influences ecosystem dynamics.
graduate students

Chad Gibson
OEAS graduate student
Chad is particularly interested in developing localization and adaptive navigation algorithms for networks of heterogeneous, underwater, sampling platforms, such as gliders and floats.

Leah Wilczynski
OEAS graduate student
Leah’s research interests are centered on quantifying the impacts of changing ocean conditions off the coast of Oregon and Washington and their implications for commercially relevant species.
